ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY

ORTHOGNATHIC SURGERY

Orthognathic surgery is needed when there is an advanced jaw disorder that cannot be improved by fixed orthodontic treatment. Teamwork is essential in this treatment option. After orthodontic treatment, certain arrangements are made with brackets and braces, and surgery is performed by an experienced surgeon. In the third step, orthodontic procedures are applied again.

Orthognathic treatment includes severe upper jaw advancement or delay in development of the upper jaw, severe lower jaw growth or lower jaw growth failure, and asymmetries and bone disorders related to the lower jaw or upper jaw. First, the patient is asked to have completed their growth and development period for the surgery. Even if pre-orthodontic treatment is started before, we must wait until the completion of the growth of the bone structures by monitoring with images and surgical procedures are started afterwards for permanent results. Before surgery, lower and upper teeth relations are prepared with orthodontic treatment according to the surgery plan. Jaw narrowings are opened, extraction gaps are closed or arranged for prosthesis in the future. During the operation, the most important role of the orthodontist is to prepare the surgical splints to guide the surgeon according to the surgery plan, which is decided by taking the surgeon's opinion. We can think of these devices as a template for the procedure. After these preparations, the patient is taken into operation. Jaw bones are cut and fixed in the desired position with surgical screws. Orthodontic treatment is continued 3-4 weeks after discharge to complete the remaining details.

Requiring cooperation by the orthodontist and the surgeon, this treatment method ensures that both aesthetic and functional needs of the patient are met.
