WHAT IS SINUS LIFT SURGERY?

WHAT IS SINUS LIFT SURGERY?

There are anatomical air spaces in the upper jaw bone. Sometimes, after the posterior teeth in the upper jaw are extracted, these spaces expand due to air pressure and a reduction occurs in the jawbone. There must be a certain amount of bone to make implants in these areas, but when the loss in the bone is too much, there is not enough bone to implant; in these cases, surgical bone addition is performed, called a sinus lift, to increase the reduced bone amount.

Sinus lift surgery is a more advanced surgical technique than most implant surgeries. However, it is performed by experienced physicians and the patient starts to use fixed prosthesis instead of removable prosthesis. When performed by a careful and experienced physician, the success rate is very high and there is no harm. It is performed under local anesthesia.

It is performed in 2 ways:

-Open lift : If bone loss is severe, the sinus wall is opened from the side and artificial materials (graft-membrane) are placed to allow bone to be formed later and the area is closed. If there is sufficient bone, the implant is placed in the same session. If the bone is not sufficient to keep the implants stable, we wait for a time decided by the doctor and the implants are placed later. Open lift is the type of procedure where bone loss is severe and the amount of bone needs to be increased by a lot.

-Closed lift : If bone loss is not too much, the implant process is started; the doctor performs bone elevation from the implant slot and then places the implant. This is done in cases where there is a small amount of bone deficiency, but just enough to stabilize the implant in the bone, and it is a simpler procedure than the open lift method. The amount of bone gained is less in this method.

After sinus lift surgery, attention should be paid to everything related to the sinus, apart from everything else requiring attention in other surgical procedures. For example, it is necessary to not perform pressure nasal cleaning and to keep the mouth open in case of sneezing. Also, it is recommended not to fly by plane or dive too deep under water in the first weeks of the procedure.
We recommend that you follow your doctor's recommendations after the procedure.
